Zimbabwe’s answer to Madonna – Stella Chiweshe – and multi-talented poet, writer and artist Malika Booker are two of the stars who will be featured at an event celebrating Women’s History Month in March.

The UK Centre for Carnival Arts is putting on an evening of inspiring talks, workshops and powerful performances from the region’s most talented female artists.

It kicks off at 6pm next Friday (March 8) with a series of free talks, starting with local social enterprise champion Saundra Glenn who founded the Bedfordshire Consortium to the London 2012 Games.
She will be discussing the potential for women to excel in business.

Saundra will be followed by carnival queen and international artist Clary Salandy with a fascinating insight into the vital role of women in carnival arts.

Then black Madonna Stella will lead a fun workshop on traditional Zimbabwe song and dance.

Tickets for the evening performance cost £8 (£5 for concessions) when the audience will be treated not only to sets from Stella and Malika – inaugural Poet in Residence at the Royal Shakespeare Company – but also a pulsating Punjabi Giddha dance demonstration and soca tunes from Luton’s very own DJ Twin-T.

UKCCA creative director Pax Nindi said: “Our Women’s History Month event is a true celebration of female creativity and innovation.

“We are thrilled to have so many inspiring women all here under one roof.”

He added: “It’s not just for women –everyone’s invited to enjoy and take part in this fantastic, unforgettable evening.”
