New gallery for Luton
Martin Shaw of the Departure Lounge
A NEW gallery opens in Luton on Saturday with an exciting exhibition showcasing three emerging artists who work on photographic portraits.
Departure Lounge, curated by Matthew Shaul and Trevor Horsewood, is a modern gallery aiming to introduce a wider variety of art to the people of Luton.
The current exhibition – All That I Am – is the first in a series of projects involving events, talks and workshops.
It gives a platform to three artists who take an unconventional approach to portraits.
Julie Cook’s series Beauties of Today taps into the controversial flair of London’s Burlesque background.
Dead Eagle Trail by Jane Hilton is a striking testament to the rapidly disappearing cowboy culture of Western America.
US-based Nancy Newberry presents Texan teenagers rites of passage with ‘MUM’s’ – short for chrysanthemums – an intricate sculptural rosette worn for college graduations and homecoming parades.
The free exhibition runs from July 14 to September 15. It is open from 2pm to 6pm Thursday and Friday and 1pm to 6pm on Saturday.
