Stopsley High School construction students are on a roll. After growing veg in specially raised beds for Luton’s homeless and refurbishing an old playhouse for Stopsley Baptist Church childrens centre, they looked to see who else would like to benefit from their expertise.

Course tutor Neil Fitzjohn said: “ We put the feelers out and Lady Zia Wernher school took us up on our offer. They came to visit our garden area to get some ideas, fell in love with a pergola we had designed and asked us to build them one.

“It was made using traditional techniques such as mortice and tenon and halving joints – it wasn’t just nailed together.

“The construction was delayed because of bad weather and building works but our team was finally able to complete it last week.”

He added: “It was an excellent project for our inspirational students who’ve been involved in several community activities over the last 12 months.”
