The parents of tiny prem baby Jamie Luke Adams have been overwhelmed by the heartwarming surge of support from generous Herald&Post readers.

After our front page story last week, Stopsley couple Kellie and Lee Adams (pictured) were inundated with donations for their appeal to help buy a £5,000 Vapotherm machine for the Luton&Dunstable Hospital’s NICU unit.

The fund now stands at £8,215.63.

Kellie said: “It’s been amazing, we’re absolutely over the moon.

“We can’t thank you and your readers enough. We’ve already beaten our target - and we haven’t even held our fundraising evening yet.

“Raffle prizes have also been pouring in. We’ve got more than 40, including weekends away, afternoon tea at Luton Hoo and a mountain bike.

“We’re not saying ‘no’ to anything – we’re going to make it a really, really good night.”

Little Jamie Luke has been in the NICU since he arrived 18 weeks early on Hallowe’en last year. His twin brother Luke was stillborn.

The tiny tot was so poorly his parents were warned he wouldn’t survive and he was blessed in his bed.

But last week the little fighter was moved from the intensive care unit to the high dependency ward and his parents couldn’t be more delighted.

“It’s a much quieter room for him and he’s really settled,” Kellie said.

“He still gets as much care as he needs and we’ll always be grateful to the NICU staff. He wouldn’t be here without them.”

She added: “He’s responding really well to physio since he started on the Vapotherm. He’s much happier and more comfortable.”

A CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) was used to help him breathe initially but this left livid red welts on his fragile skin.

The Vapotherm is not so invasive and the Adams decided to raise the money to buy one for the unit as a way of saying thank you.

Now they’re hoping to buy two.

Their fundraising event will take place at Stopsley Working Men’s Club at 7.30pm on Friday, March 8. Tickets will be £5 on the night.

NICU fundraising manager Sarah Newby thanked the Herald&Post for putting the story on the front page. She said: “It certainly got the attention it deserved and the response has been unbelievable.”
