A gala dinner has raised more than £5,000 for Luton charity Stepping Stones which helps women in Bedfordshire through crisis situations.

Chairman Margaret Simons said: “A third of the women we support have backgrounds in domestic abuse or addictions and many also have a mental illness. A proportion need help after being released from prison.”

Patron Gavin Shuker MP said: “It’s impossible to over-emphasise the desperate situation of many women in our society today and the fantastic help and emotional support offered by Stepping Stones.”

Ms Simons added: “We believe that women in extreme situations should not have to suffer. The money raised from our gala dinner will enable us to support many more women in crisis or abusive situations.”
