Hatters fan diplomat dies in Romania

A British diplomat and lifelong Hatters fan died after a fall from a seventh-floor hotel room in Romania on Thursday.

Ian Saunders, 46, from Luton, was based at the British embassy in the capital Bucharest.

The Express reported that detectives found a note in his room addressed to his family in which he said he was depressed.

Mr Saunders’ cousin Simon Purslow wrote on the Luton Town Fan message board on Monday: “Ian was my cousin and a life long Luton Town supporter.

“Ian is survived by his father, Bernard, and sister, Kate, who as you can imagine are devastated by this shocking news. His good humour and cheery way will be sadly missed by us all. It would have been his birthday today.”

LTFC fans who knew Ian wrote condolences on the forum including his best friend who said he and Ian went to their first Luton game at home to Chelsea together in 1974.

He said Ian was “an off the wall bloke trying to make you laugh all of the time. We had so many laughs together, we were like brothers. It is so so sad what has just happened...Ian was a top bloke.”

Hatters fans have started an Ian Saunders Tribute Fund in his memory.
