Luton & Dunstable Hospital fundraiser revealed as millionth London Marathon finisher

Shannon Foudy, 39, was running her first marathon when she completed the feat on April 24, a challenge she took on to thank the L&D’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) after it saved the life of her premature baby.

In January 2010 Shannon gave birth at 26 weeks and her daughter Catrin weighed just 2lb 5oz.

With the help of the NICU Catrin battled through organ failure and a brain haemorrhage and is now a healthy six-year-old.

Shannon, who finished the marathon in five hours and 45 minutes, was cheered on by Catrin, her partner Jamie and other members of her family.

She said: “I knew about the one in a million campaign and it’s unbelievable that I am the millionth finisher.

“I ran to say thank you to the Luton & Dunstable NICU and it is the most worthwhile thing I have ever done.”

Shannon, a police officer from Hemel Hempstead, added: “Catrin, Jamie and my mum and dad were at the 14 mile mark so I stopped there for a few cuddles.

“Being surrounded by so many people running for great causes was amazing.”

So far Shannon’s efforts have raised more than £2,500 for the NICU.

Sarah Amexheta, fundraising manager at the L&D, added: “I would like to thank Shannon for taking on the challenge of the London Marathon and raising money for our NICU.

“It is an outstanding achievement and the money she has raised will help us buy additional lifesaving equipment.”
