Imagine coming home to find double yellow lines painted outside your front door...

Bedford woman finds her "worst nightmare"

A 'ridiculous' decision to paint double yellow lines has made one resident's worst nightmare come true.

Emily McGregor of Clarendon Street, Bedford, returned home from a trip to the town centre to find double yellow lines had been painted on the road right outside her home.

Ms McGregor said: "I was shocked to come home and find there were double yellow lines painted outside my house.

"This is my worst nightmare. Before there was parking available outside my home around 50 per cent of the time, but now I can never park outside.

"I have two young children and that will cause a big problem when getting in and out with shopping.

"Residents voted for a resident only parking scheme here, but we had no idea that it would mean taking away all our parking spaces."

Four streets in the Prime Ministers area of Bedford have now become residents only parking streets, including Beaconsfield Street, Palmerston Street and Park Road West.

Double yellow lines were originally painted in Clarendon Street, but over the years these faded and residents parked with no penalty.

But now the council has re-enforced the double yellow lines after locals voted in favour of introducing parking restrictions.

Councillor Colleen Atkins said: "Parking in the Black Tom area has always been difficult, both during the day time and at night.

"Residents voted in favour of residents only parking, but the parking restriction in Clarendon Street is a lot bigger than I had expected from the council."

Drivers who park on the lines will face penalties from next Tuesday, December 1.

A spokesman for the council said: "Residents only parking restrictions have been introduced to streets in the Prime Ministers area at the request of local residents.

"Following these requests we carried out an extensive consultation among the local community in order to seek to tailor the scheme design to best meet the needs of those living in the area."
