Is car park full? - drive 13 miles

"Nonsense" sign frustrates Bedford communters

Rail commuters have been offered a solution to their parking blues if they find the car park at Bedford Railway Station is full - an additional 13 mile drive to Flitwick.

Signs which have recently been erected in the station car park state: "Car park full? Did you know that alternative parking is available at Flitwick Station (13.4 miles)".

Rail users reckon the notice is "a nonsense".

Arthur Taylor, chairman of the Bedford Commuters' Association, said: "It seems like a bit of a nonsense to me.

"At the moment there are spare places in Flitwick, but I would have thought that anyone planning on catching a train from Bedford would be reluctant to drive another 13-plus miles to park their car.

"If you want to catch a fast train to London then Flitwick is no good to you, as East Midlands Trains services don't stop at Flitwick. And if you want to go north of Bedford you have the same problem.

"I don't think many people will bother with this. They will just park in town and walk to the station."

A spokesman for rail operator First Capital Connect said: "Our car park at Bedford is very popular and frequently full.

"This sign is simply about letting people know that the next station down the line also has a car park which is less busy and may suit their needs."
