Luton South MP Gavin Shuker is “overjoyed” with his promotion to Shadow Minister for International Development.
His new role was announced this week.
Gavin – elected in 2010 after his predecessor Margaret Moran was forced to stand down after an expenses scandal – said: “I know it’s a tough brief but I also feel it’s one of the most important.
“It’s essential for our team to show what difference we can make to the lives of people who witness firsthand ongoing conflict, human rights abuses and absolute poverty.” He added: “It’s a task I feel humbled to be part of.”
The former Icknield High head boy, whose daughter Ruby was born this summer, was previously shadow Minister for Water and Waste at DEFRA.
He will now be leading on Asia, Caribbean and overseas territories as well as the Middle East and North Africa.
His brief includes international finance and relations, trade and corporate performance.
He will be joining a new team alongside Wirral MP Alison McGovern, led by Shadow Secretary of State Jim Murphy.
