Airport link road months from completion

Works to end 'late 2008'

Motorists frustrated at delays caused by the roadworks near the Luton Airport still have months to wait for the project to be completed.

The East Luton Corridor works, which will create a dual carriageway link road between the M1 and Luton Airport, were due to finish in March. But the 22 million project has been beset by problems, and a new timetable for the works has now been agreed on, with completion forecast for late 2008.

Luton Borough Council says an exact date is not available from Birse Civils Ltd, which is are carrying out the work. The firm faced issues with last year's wet weather and the construction of an embankment between Gipsy Lane and Park Street. And the council says "technical difficulties" and the unexpected location of service utilities have also hampered progress.

A council spokesman said: "The council is currently working with the contractor to develop a programme that best meets the needs of all concerned and enables the project to be opened for safe public use as soon as possible. We cannot be any more specific at the moment about the date for completion."
