Arise Lord Qurban, Hussain made a peer
LIBERAL Democrat Councillor and former Luton South parliamentary candidate Qurban Hussain is one of 50 new peers after being made a Lord.
Biscot ward Councillor Hussain was one of 15 Liberals to be given a seat on his party’s benches in the House of Lords.
Lord Hussain said: “It is obviously a great honour to be chosen to represent my home town in the House of Lords.
“Luton has been good to me. It has been a good home for my family, has given me employment and provided my children with first class education.
“As a local Councillor I have always tried to put something back into Luton and have been able to assist a great many local people with all kinds of issues.
“I now see this appointment as an opportunity to represent Luton in a major national forum. An opportunity to promote Luton’s cause and to work for resources to advance Luton’s regeneration and to enhance education, employment, training and life chances for young people in our town.”
Local Liberal Democrat leader David Franks added: “We are really thrilled at the announcement.
“Qurban has worked hard, for his constituents in Biscot and for Luton as a whole.
“He has shown his commitment to the town and will make a contribution to the work of the Liberal Democrats in the House of Lords.
“He will be Luton’s voice in the upper house when it is needed.
“Both he and I have known Nick Clegg since before he was party leader and it’s Qurban’s view that this is really recognition for the hard work of all the Lib Dem
“He’s got a great deal of experience of life at the hard and sharp end. He wasn’t born into a well to do family and he’s built up his own family and success with his own hard work.”
Lord Hussain was first elected as a Labour councillor back in 1996, serving until 1999.
He was re-elected as a Lib Dem councillor in 2003 and was deputy leader of Luton Borough Council from 2005 to 2007.
Lord Hussain stood as a parliamentary candidate in Luton South in 2005 and again in 2009, coming in third behind current MP Gavin Shuker and Tory hopeful Nigel Huddleston.
It is unclear whether he will carry on in his role as deputy leader of the local Liberal Democrats.
Councillor Franks added: “One of the things we’re going to be talking about is whether he will be able to carry on as a councillor but baring in mind there’s elections coming up next year, he’ll take some time to consider whether or not he can continue.”
