Artist’s study of post-war Luton

editorial image

Elements of Luton architecture that the town’s residents may take for granted – or even despise – are the subject of new photography exhibition.

Luton Overlay, showing at the Departure Lounge gallery in George Street until next March, contemplates a number of the town’s post-Second World War buildings and how they sit with the landscape and the town’s prior architectural history.

The images are part of a larger touring exhibition, London Overspill, by photographer James Smith, whose Luton subjects include Marsh Farm’s Purley Centre, the Sundon water tower, the vine-clad concrete walls of the Telford Way/Dunstable Road junction, and even Luton Town’s Kenilworth Road home.

Textures are also examined in close-up, from the white cladding on the Mall car park, to tiles, bricks, breezeblocks and chipboard.

Luton Overlay is Departure Lounge’s second exhbition since opening earlier this year.

And the artist is calling on Lutonians can get involved with a participatory event, ‘From the Shoebox’, towards the end of the exhibition’s run.

If you have images new or old showing the development of Luton’s townscape, they could be selected to go on show. Visit www.departure-lounge.co.uk for more details.
