Baroness Howells comes to Luton
Activist will give two lectures at Hat Factory
The first black woman to sit on the Greater Londer Council's Training Board visits Luton next week, to give two special lectures to raise cash for a cause close to her heart.
Baroness Rosalind Patricia-Anne Howells of St David OBE will speak at the Hat Factory on Friday, March 28.
At 4pm she will address youngsters in the town about youth leadership, and at 7.30pm there will be an evening lecture and reception open to all.
Each ticket sold will provide a donation towards the Grenada International Foundation Trust (GIFT), of which the Baroness is a trustee and founder.
Grenada suffered major damage in Hurricane Ivan in 2004, with more than 90 per cent of the island affected and now rebuilt.
But the relief funds have dried up and the House of Parliament and Governor's Mansion still lay in ruin.
The Baroness dreams of seeing these buildings back in use during her lifetime.
Baroness Howells was the first female member of the Court of Governors of the University of Greenwich and was the Vice Chair at the London Voluntary Services Council.
She has been an activist for more than 30 years and worked tirelessly on the Stephen Lawrence Campaign.
She was ennobled to the House of Lords in 1999 and continues to work for justice for ethnic minorities and the disadvantaged.
Tickets for the youth leadership lecture, followed by a question and answer session and performances, cost 10.
The evening lecture, which includes wine reception and Caribbean buffet, costs 20.
