Blockbuster in Luton was already closed
DVD rental chain Blockbuster closed down its store in Luton months before the company went into administration yesterday (January 16).
The Park Street branch of the store went on the market in August last year, when Blockbuster decided not to renew the lease.
Property consultants Kirby & Diamond said there is already a firm lined up to rent the retail unit although they can’t disclose any further details.
The future of the Marsh Road store remains to be seen.
A Blockbuster spokesperson said: “Unfortunately at this time we do not have the level of detail to comment on the future of individual stores.
“Each store employs an average of about five staff. Around three quarters of our staff are part time.”
The success of online video streaming services such as Netflix and LoveFilm may have contributed to the downfall of the once much-loved rental outlet.
Accountancy firm Deloitte have been appointed administrators of the company and announced they will continue to trade as normal while they seek a buyer.
Gift cards and credit acquired through Blockbuster’s trade-in scheme will be honoured towards the purchase of goods.”
