Businesses ignored safety warnings
Faults 'could have electrocuted staff'
Three Luton car repair company owners have been fined a total of 4,000 for failing to act on electrical defects in their workshops – exposing their workers to a serious risk of injury.
The Health and Safety Executive yesterday prosecuted Azhar Mohammed, owner of of ANS Bodyshop and AMS Spares in Empress Road, Luton, for failing to comply with improvement notices served last May.
Izhar Ul Haq, owner of BM's Repair Centre, and Asif Butt, of Hydeny Autos, were sentenced for a similar offence on July 23 and August 23, 2010 respectively.
Both companies are also based in Empress Road.
Luton Magistrates Court heard how the electrical equipment in the companies' workshops was defective, creating a risk of electrocutions, electric shock, fire or even explosions.
When safety inspectors returned in October 2009, all three companies had failed to address the problems.
Butt and Mohammed admitted breaching health and safety laws for failing to act on the improvement notices.
Butt was fined 500 and ordered to pay costs of 742, while Mohammed was fined 1,500 with costs of 742.40.
Ul Haq pleaded guilty to failing to act on the improvement notices, and failing to arrange maintenance examinations of a defective car hoist.
He was fined 2,000 and ordered to pay costs of 742.
Investigating inspector Stephen Manley said: "These three men completely ignored their legal responsibilities under a direct instruction, leaving workers and others at risk."
