Card cloning warning at Luton petrol station

Customer stung by chip and pin scam

A car storage company boss has warned drivers to beware of credit card cloning at a Luton petrol station.

Lee Shepherd, Central Cars Storage, claimed two of his firm's cards had been cloned at the garage in Eaton Green Road and then used abroad.

"We use the Shell petrol station for filling up the company buses," he said.

"We have had two cards cloned there and they have been trying to use them in Australia. Thankfully, HSBC contacted us and thought it was suspicious."

Mr Shepherd, whose company looks after people's cars when they fly out of Luton Airport, said one of the cards was immediately stopped by the bank while the other was debited 217 before suspicions were raised.

The company director said he was convinced the cards' details could have only been copied while at the Shell garage.

A Shell spokeswoman said they knew of only one incident of card cloning, on October 6, at the Eaton Green Road station.

"The security of our customer transactions is our primary concern," she added.

"Any reports of fraudulent activity are immediately followed up by Shell's own investigators, who also engage the police, APACS and the card service providers to tackle card fraud.

"We recognize that card cloning is an industry issue and apologize for any inconvenience to our customers."
