Charlie's charity bike ride in memory of his brother

Charlie Nelson started the bike ride at Addenbrooke’s Hospital on Easter Saturday and spent ten days cycling round the Norfolk area, the coastline and back to the hospital.

He wanted to start the ride at the hospital because that was where his brother, Reece, eight, was treated after being diagnosed with a brain tumour.

Lealands High school teacher Mr Payne helped Charlie organise the bike ride and joined him on it.

Charlie said: “I sadly lost Reecie, my best friend, to a brain tumour that he had been battling for almost a year.

“I miss him so much everyday, so now I spend my time raising money for this worthy charity.

“I am extremely proud about what I have raised by completing the bike ride.

“I hope the money will mean that no other family will have to go through what we have, the ride was tough at times but thinking about Reece got me through those moments.”

He has raised over £10,000 for the Reecie Nelson Superstar fund which is part of The Brain Tumour Charity, the fund was set up in 2012 by Reece’s family to continue his memory and support the charity.

Michelle Daglish, a friend of the family, said: “Charlie was joined by family and friends at different parts of the ride, they chose that area because it is where they had lots of special family holidays, so it seemed a fitting tribute.

“He is a very inspirational young lad considering what he has been through, his family and everyone is proud of him and what he had achieved.”
