Contractors guilty of not telling people their rights
Justice
Two contractors who failed to explain cancellation rights to a customer were fined over £2000 by Luton Crown Court.
John Stanley, 46, of Hitchin Road and Eamon Kane, 59 of Ashcroft Road both plead guilty to unfair commercial practice, and Stanley was found guilty of further unfair commerical practice after trying to impose a £1,000 fee for scaffolding which was not legally enforceable.
They received a 12 month conditional discharge, must pay £750 each to the consumer plus court costs of £1068 each.
Cllr Mohammed Ashraf, portfolio holder for trading standards, said: “It is important that contractors make consumers aware of their rights, so they can make informed decisions.
“Notice of cancellation rights allow customers a period where they can change their mind without fear of cost, and contractors must respect this. We will do all we can to protect the rights of customers in Luton.”
