Dozens told to seek help after diabetes tests
MORE than half of people tested for diabetes at an event last week were found to be at risk of developing the disease.
Diabetes UK and Bupa held the healthy lifestyle roadshow in Luton on Thursday and Friday, and tested 262 people for their Type 2 diabetes risk.
The event was held to try and identify some of the estimated 2,700 people in Luton who have the disease but do not realise it.
If diabetes is not diagnosed early enough, or is left untreated, it can lead to devastating complications such as stroke, heart disease, kidney failure and blindness.
The team referred 51 per cent of those tested to their GP after finding they had a medium to high risk of developing diabetes in the next 10 years.
People were also offed advice on lifestyle changes, such as adopting a healthy diet low in fat, salt and sugar and taking regular physical activity, as 60 per cent of Type 2 diabetes cases could be prevented by lifestyle changes.
Sharon Roberts from Diabetes UK said: “Diabetes is one of the biggest health challenges facing the UK today.
“It’s frightening that there are more than 7,000 people from across Luton PCT and Bedfordshire PCT that have Type 2 diabetes but have no idea they do.
“I am pleased that the Diabetes UK Healthy Lifestyle Roadshow was able to help people find out if they were at risk of the condition.”
