End to council help with uniform costs

Poor families in Luton will no longer receive help with the cost of school uniforms.

Luton Borough Council currently sets aside £190,000 a year to help with the cost of uniforms, but last week its executive commitee decided “reluctantly” to scrap the scheme due to to budget cuts.

Under the scheme, families who qualified for free school meals could receive £25 a year to help with the costs of uniform, given out as vouchers.

Members agreed the council should work to encourage schools adopt cheaper uniforms and make pre-worn uniforms available.
