Firefighters called to rescue man and his pet parrot

Owner climbs on to a roof to catch his beloved bird

A plumbing and heating engineer had to be rescued by firefighters on Monday, after climbing on to a roof to rescue his beloved pet parrot.

Hass Mustafa, of J&H Plumbing, was horrified when his blue and gold macaw escaped outside his home in Bloomfield Avenue, Luton, yesterday afternoon.

The beautiful bird, named Macauley, suddenly flew out of his owner's grip and Mr Mustafa had no choice but to follow in hot pursuit in his van.

Macauley, who is seven months old and often goes to work with Mr Mustafa, landed on a roof in Talbot Road shortly before 4pm, still in view of his owner.

Out of sheer determination, Mr Mustafa, aged 48, climbed up on to the roof with just his bare hands.

Mr Mustafa said: "I snatched him, grabbed him and stuck him under my shirt. He was clawing me, trying to get out, and I couldn't get down. I would've been fine if I didn't have a bird under my jumper."

Firefighters were called to help him down safely while holding the animal.

A fire crew from Stopsley Fire Station and an aerial platform were sent to rescue the unlikely pair.
