Get on your bike to get to station
Cllr David Franks at Luton station bike rack
‘Use your bike to get to the train’ – that’s the message from Luton Borough Council’s Lib Dem leader Councillor David Franks.
He was speaking after it was announced that the government will spend £237,000 boosting cycle facilities at Luton and Leagrave stations.
A grant of £176,000 will provide 228 secure cycle spaces at Luton while Leagrave will benefit to the tune of £61,700 for 40.
The money is part of a £62 million investment to improve cycling infrastructure and safety.
Cllr Franks said: “We’ve seen some improvements in Luton but much more work is needed and this additional funding comes at the right time.”
He added: “Cycling is healthy and there’s nothing more pleasing than whizzing on your bike past cars stuck in traffic.”
A First Capital Connect spokesman said: “ All the bike racks will be covered – both against the elements and by CCTV cameras – to improve security which will be monitored around the clock.”
Thirty new spaces will be available in the multi-storey car park by the end of March.
