Golden girls battle soggy conditions

Four teenagers braved sodden conditions and mountainous terrain to go for gold in the Peak District and Snowdonia.

Cardinal Newman students Katie Hill, Charlotte Flanagan, Summer Rosonovski and Aishlyn Callaghan camped for eight days and walked a total of 160km to achieve their gold Duke of Edinburgh expedition award.

Geography teacher Mark Brockway, one of the staff who accompanied the girls, said: “We had a very difficult week of weather.

“It rained every day and the students encountered some very tough conditions. Despite this, the girls were fantastic.

“Through their own determination and group strength, they passed their Gold Expedition.

“The only hiccup was the day they walked 7km with the mini bus key in their pocket and I had to run over an hour through the mountains to retrieve it from them.”

“This is also a fantastic achievement for the school.

In the last eight years no other schools in Luton have put their students through their Gold Duke of Edinburgh.”

Katie Hill said: “The expedition was one of the most challenging things I have had to carry out, both mentally and physically.

“There were times I didn’t think we would complete it, with a month’s worth of rain in eight hours, heavy bags and aching muscles.

“But that made the experience at the end much more rewarding.”

“I won’t be forgetting the experience any time soon.”
