Handy device launched in bid to cut kitchen fires
Clip-on cooking timer being given away for free
A new safety device aimed at cutting kitchen fires and saving lives has been launched by the Bedfordshire and Luton Fire and Rescue Service.
The clip-on cooking timer which can be worn on clothing will help remind people to return to pans when cooking if they get distracted or move away from the cooker.
The new timer was the idea of community safety officer Jane Clarke who saw it as a simple way of preventing cooking-related fires.
The clip-on timers are being given away as part of the service's Home Fire Safety Checks, where fire service personnel give advice on fire safety in people's homes and fit a free smoke detector if required.
The timer can be stood on the kitchen side and also has a magnet on the back, but ideally should be clipped onto clothing, and the design has proved such a success that Jane is now looking into creating a vibrating version for the hard of hearing.
In addition to the Home Fire Safety Checks, Jane and her colleagues give talks to groups and clubs where the timers are distributed.
For a free Home Safety Check call 0800 043 5042 or to arrange a talk for a group or club call 01234 351081 and ask for the Community Safety Team.
