Happy Harry loses his head

Luton Town mascot in costume drama

Luton Town Football Club's popular mascot Happy Harry is now Unhappy Harry after his head was dramatically stolen!

The costume drama unfolded on Thursday lunchtime as the larger-than-life character was being transported to the town's Debenham's store to meet supporters.

The Hatters staff member who was taking the mascot to meet his adoring public loaded up her car but mistakenly left Harry's enormous head on the roof.

As she drove off, the head rolled away down the road and was last seen being swiped by a motorist who stashed it in the boot of his car and scarpered.

On Tuesday, ironically April Fools Day, there was still no sign of the head being returned, so Hatters were forced to issue an appeal for the kidnapped body part.

The cash-strapped club, which is currently in administration and languishing in the League One relegation zone, has also put up a 100 reward.

After intially fearing her head might roll like Harry's, Tracy Maddox, of Luton Town's commercial department, admitted to making the mascot mistake and was relieved the club had seen the comical side of the mishap.

She told Luton Today: "I put the costume in the car and put the head on the roof. I drove from the Maple Road car park and over the bridge and it must have toppled and rolled down Oak Road.

"I didn't realise until I got to Debenhams and took the costume out on its hanger.

Tracy revealed that upon her arrival in the town centre she had been called by club secretary Cherry Newbery who informed her that a gas meter reader had witnessed the theft of Harry's head.

She said: "Apparently he didn't realise it was Harry's head at first. He said he'd seen something rolling down the road. It must have been quite a sight as Harry's head is so big.

"He saw a car pull up. It was a black Corsa and the driver put it in the boot. No registration was taken."

The club has said it won't press charges against the culprit if the precious head is returned.

Tracy said: "It's part of Luton Town. Harry's been around for quite a long time. We just want him back.
