Plans to turn an historic pub into retail outlets have been approved by Luton Borough Council subject to conditions.

The Town Hall’s Development Control Committee gave the thumbs up to proposals to turn the Railway Tavern, in High Town Road, into two shops, and office unit and a coffee bar.

High Town residents and businesses had signed a petition calling for the building’s character to be maintained.

The pub is thought to date back to 1825 when it was first listed in licencing records as the George IV.

It ceased trading as a pub earlier this year.
