Incentive scheme will pay council tenants to downsize

COUNCIL house tenants in Luton will be offered £2,000 for each bedroom they give up if they agree to move to a smaller property, it was decided last night (May 28).

The new tenant incentive scheme was agreed at a meeting of Luton Borough Council’s Executive Committee, in an attempt to address the problems of overcrowding and under-occupancy in Luton.

It is estimated that 30 per cent of households in Luton are under-occupying their council homes and last year there were 228 families waiting for a four-bedroom property, but only two of the council’s 114 four-bed homes became available.
