Infants taught to escape fire at national safety day

Fire minister will attend event

Little learners at Farley Hill Junior School will learn to escape the dangers of fire on Wednesday, November 19.

The Key Stage One youngsters will take part in a fire awareness day being held at Luton Fire Station in Studley Road - part of the National School Fire Safety Day, backed by government ministers.

Planning an escape route in the event of a fire will be the main message for the infants.

Fire minister Sadiq Khan, who will be at the event, said: "Fire and rescue services work tirelessly to prevent fires from starting, but it is important that when fires do occur we know how to react. Children need to know how to escape from a fire and we want to get families working out an escape plan together.

"Schools can play an important part in this; encouraging children to take home their fire safety awareness. Ultimately, it could save lives."

Schools across England have been encouraged to participate in the event, launched by The Firefighters Charity and the Fire Kills Campaign.
