A body discovered almost a fortnight ago has been confirmed as that of missing Luton man Edward Gillespie, who disappeared after his office Christmas party.

Police had been searching for Mr Gillespie since he went missing from the Roydon Marina Hotel on December 21, 2012. His body was recovered from the marina on January 26.

An inquest into Mr Gillespie’s death was opened and adjourned by HM Coroner for Essex on Tuesday.

Mr Gillespie’s mum, Jane Gillespie, said: “No words can express my feelings at the moment.

“I doubt if I will ever come to terms with the loss of Ed but I have drawn some small comfort over the past weeks from the kindness and help that so many people have shown me.

“I would like to thank the police for everything they have done since Ed first went missing and everyone else who helped in the search for him.

“I would also like to thank people for their thoughts and prayers and the support of all Edward’s friends.”

Friends of Mr Gillespie have described him as someone who loved life.
