A week long inquest into the death of a Luton man who died from gunshot wounds in a park last year is to be held later this month.

Idi Atiba, 31, died from gunshot wounds in Leagrave Park on January 24 2011 following a 15-hour stand off with armed police and negotiators.

Police had been called to the park the previous evening after reports of a man armed with a gun. He was surrounded by police marksmen and negotiators close to the centre spot of one of the park’s football pitches.

Officers pleaded with Mr Atiba overnight to put the gun down but he was pronounced dead at the scene after he shot himself in the chest.

The inquest will take place the week commencing October 29.
