Children’s nurses at Keech Hospice Care have lost £300 of their own money as a result of Strathmore Hotel in Luton closing down.

It was announced on Friday that the hotel is set to close as a result of parent company Menzies Hotels going into administration.

The group of 30 nurses booked their Christmas Party at the hotel in The Mall a month ago and paid a £300 deposit.

A spokesperson for Keech Hospice Care said: “The nurses are rather peeved. They work really hard and look forward to their Christmas party every year. They don’t get the opportunity to go out as a team very often and this is a special occasion for them. Now they probably won’t have a party because they are not getting that £300 back and they can’t afford to pay out again.

“The job that they do is really tough. They are caring for sick children, children who are dying, and looking after grieving families. This party is a chance to get out and have some fun.”

A property group has purchased 12 of Menzies Hotels’ 15 hotels and Luton is one of three hotels set to close, resulting in 155 job losses.

Menzies Hotels have been contacted for a comment.
