L&D at forefront of new technology
A life-saver for young heart patients
A life-saving high tech link between the Luton & Dunstable Hospital and Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital could significantly improve the lives of Bedfordshire babies and children with serious heart conditions.
The tele-medicine service between paediatricians is being launched at the L&D on November 13.
It is one of the first hospitals in the East of England to invest in the equipment, which will be used by specialist neonatologists who work with premature and critically ill babies as well as paediatricians in the children's ward and children's outpatients departments.
The new machinery has a real-time two-way video link between the two hospitals so GOSH cardiac specialists can see and discuss diagnoses face-to-face with L&D doctors.
This will enable patients to benefit from the shared expertise of specialist doctors at both hospitals without the inconvenience of an ambulance journey to London.
L&D chief executive Stephen Ramsden welcomed the partnership and said the new facility was thanks to a generous legacy given to the hospital's League of Friends.
