M1 hard shoulder running scheme now live

THE ‘managed motorway’ hard shoulder running scheme is now live on the M1, after several trial periods.

The stretch between junctions 10 and 11 now has variable speed limits and the hard shoulder available at peak times, both managed by signs on overhead gantries.

The scheme had gone live eight months earlier than planned, a spokesman for the Highways Agency said.
