A man was arrested for firearm and drug offences after his car was registered as having no insurance by police in Luton on Monday (November 19).

The 22 year old was stopped by officers from the Beds and Herts Roads Policing Unit in Sundon Road, Streatley at 1.40pm after being captured by the Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system.

Officers smelt what they thought was cannabis so searched the vehicle and found a firearms silencer and a modified steering lock marked with the words “meet my buddy, buddy”.

The vehicle was recovered and a further search revealed ten bags of what is thought to be cannabis.

The man was arrested on suspicion of possession of a section one firearm, possession of a class B drug with intent to supply, theft of a motor vehicle, fraud involving vehicle insurance, driving without insurance and making off without payment from the Sundon Park Road garage on October 19.

Chief Inspector Rob McCaffray, based at Luton Police Station, said: “Bedfordshire Police continues to crackdown on criminals in our county by making it a difficult place for them to travel. The ANPR system is one of many tactics we will continue to employ to ensure we put pressure on those who commit offences in order to protect the public and their property.”

Anyone who has information about those committing offences can contact Bedfordshire Police, in complete confidence, on 101 or text information to 07786 200011. Alternatively, you can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
