A man jumped from the window of a burning building in Cheapside, Luton this morning (March 15).

He injured his leg in the process but managed to escape and call firefighters at 5.38am.

Both floors of the two-storey building, a shop with residential flats above it, were on fire.

The man who called 999 was not sure if there were still people trapped inside, but when firefighters attended they could not find anyone.

An East of England Ambulance spokesperson said: “EEAST sent two ambulance crews, a duty officer and the Hazardous Area Response Team (HART). The patient was conveyed to the Luton & Dunstable Hospital.”

His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

The blaze was under control by 6.39am and the building was 40 per cent fire damaged and 100 per cent smoke and heat damaged.

A fire investigation is underway.
