It’s official – dedicated Luton charity legend Mehbub ‘Mugsy’ Koyes has been crowned Children and Young People’s Champion.
He was given the prestigious title at the The Children & Young People Now Awards which recognise and celebrate innovative and inspiring initiatives across the UK.
Mugsy, 31, said he was thrilled and delighted with the accolade, which he hopes will inspire other youngsters to follow in his footsteps.
The former Denbigh High pupil admitted he was one of the original NEETS (not in education, employment or training).
“But I started attending Mitalee clubs and programmes and made positive progress,” he said.
He was encouraged to take a foundation degree in youth and community development by Mitalee founder Ashuk Ahmed MBE and is now youth and training manager at Mitalee and Diverse FM.
Mugsy pioneered a media training programme for disadvantaged young people.
He said: “We’re trying to engage them in vocational qualifications, mainstream education and employment.”
