MND supporter cycles to Paris

Mark Anness is doing the charity challenge in memory of his mum and father-in-law

A Luton-born computer programmer whose mother and father-in-law died of motor neurone disease is pedalling from London to Paris on a fundraising charity ride.

For Mark Anness, 56, who now lives in Bournemouth, it is also to celebrate his return to fitness after breaking a hip in a cycling accident.

"I was on crutches for three months before the fracture was discovered," he said. "I needed a full hip replacement in the end."

His mother Ruth died of MND 24 years ago when she was just 54. "It was quite a new thing then," he said. "Not much was known about it and it wasn't put on her death certificate.

"When my father-in-law was diagnosed three years later we just accepted it. We let our faith take care of these things."

Mark's father Ray devoted his life to the MND Association, both as a visitor and honorary treasurer of the local branch. He retired three years ago at the ripe old age of 79.

Mark is hoping to raise more than 1,000 on his three day 300 km ride. His niece's husband is joining him on the trip.
