Moran has paid back just £6k

Luton Today can reveal that former MP Margaret Moran has repaid just £6,000 of the expenses she wrongly claimed from the taxpayer.

Earlier this month a jury decided the former Luton South MP – who was judged unfit to stand trial because of depression – had fraudulently claimed £53,000.

This week she found herself the subject of media attention yet again when photographs of her visiting a pub and walking her dog were published in The Sun and Daily Mail.

Mental health charity Mind recommends regular outdoor activity as a way to help alleviate depression, but would not comment specifically on Moran’s situation.

The pictures prompted Central Bedfordshire councillor Richard Stay to call for the former MP to repay all of the money she fraudulently claimed from the taxpayer.

Writing on his blog, he said: “It is perhaps worth considering taking legal action to seek repayment of the taxpayers’ money. There are probably enough ex-constituents sufficiently angry to take this forward.”

A House of Commons spokesman said: “Following the conclusion of the court case earlier this month the House of Commons is looking at the implications of the jury’s finding and will consider carefully what further steps might be taken.”
