New Wetherspoon pub will be brimming with hat history
IT’S been the subject of puzzled Twitter chatter for several weeks, but we can now reveal the reasoning behind the name of Wetherspoon’s latest Luton pub venture.
When the company announced last month that it would be calling its new Park Street watering hole The London Hatter, many were confused at to why the capital even got a mention, given Luton’s world famous hat-making heritage.
But the moniker in fact pays homage to the man who opened Luton’s first hat factory, London milliner Richard Vyse.
Until the Vyse factory opened in 1826, hat making had been a cottage industry, with families running businesses in their own homes around the town.
The pub will open in the former Legends nightclub building, which has been given a £960,000 makeover, on July 12.
The decor will include information and photographs documenting Luton’s hatmaking history.
