NHS Luton and Beds suspend HPV vaccine
Immunisation programme was halted after death of teen in Coventry
NHS Luton and Bedfordshire temporarily suspended the cervical cancer vaccine in the area, following the tragic death of a 14-year-old girl in Coventry just hours after having the jab.
The Department of Health ordered the batch of vaccine to be quarantined as a precaution, but insists there is no reason to stop the programme.
Having checked the batch numbers of the vaccine in stock and realised it was the same as the one used in Coventry, NHS Luton suspended the town's immunisation programme until new stock arrives.
NHS Bedfordshire also temporarily postponed giving out the injection, as a precaution, until all its own stocks of the vaccine have been checked.
But NHS Beds' batch numbers were different so the primary care trust is now running its immunisation programme as normal.
The Cervarix jab protects against two strains of the human papilloma virus (HPV), a sexually transmitted disease that cause cervical cancer in more than 70 per cent of women.
On Thursday, October 1, NHS Coventry said the vaccination was "most unlikely to have caused the death" of schoolgirl Natalie Morton, who had a "serious underlying medical condition".
Parents or youngsters worried about the safety of any vaccine should speak to their GP to discuss their concerns, or visit www.immunisation.nhs.uk
