Parents gearing up for mass demo at Cardinal Newman

Parents protest outside Luton's Cardinal Newman school about proposed faith school bus funding cuts

Cardinal Newman parents are accelerating the pressure on Luton Borough Council to abandon proposed cuts to faith school bus funding.

They’re gearing up for a public protest on Monday to demonstrate the traffic chaos that would ensue if parents had to drive children to school.

Spokeswoman for the Cardinal Newman Preserve our School Transport Committee, Antoinette Kotula, said: “We’re doing a mass drive from all Catholic primary schools in Luton to Cardinal Newman, kicking off at 8am.

“Then at 3.30pm we’ll be waiting at the gate to take our kids home by car.

“We’re aiming to show just how congested the town will be if this happens every day.”

Mrs Kotula appealed for as many parents as possible to join the protest.

She said more than 300 had attended a meeting last week to discuss the proposed cuts.

She said: “Councillors Mark Rivers and Yaqub Hanif were present.

“Various issues were raised, including cars clogging up roads around the school, lack of communication from the council, child safety and costs.”

Committee members are hoping to speak at the next full council meeting on April 16.

They will also attend the executive meeting on April 29.

Mrs Kotula added: “Parents and children will be protesting outside council offices on both dates.”
