Police investigating ex-worker over card clones, say Shell
Checks made on Luton petrol station
Oil giant Shell has revealed that police are investigating a former member of staff, after a spate of complaints from victims of card cloning at a Luton petrol station.
The Luton Today office has been inundated with calls from targets of fraud, who believe their details were copied at the garage in Eaton Green Road.
A total of 160 people wrote or called in following our reports about the Shell filling station to say they too have had cash grabbed by fraudsters on the other side of the world.
But despite this, Beds Police said it would only investigate the crime if the real victims - the banks or credit card companies - report the problem, as they are the ones who actually lose money.
Instead, Shell has disclosed that it is liasing with the Dedicated Cheque and Plastic Crime Unit (DCPCU), who are leading the investigation.
A spokeswoman said: "We have been assured by both the DCPCU and the Hertfordshire Police, which is involved as part of an ongoing investigation, that currently there is no suspicion that existing members of staff were involved, and that police are pursuing their enquiries with an ex-member of staff."
Shell also said that the Eaton Green Road site has been checked recently as part of a nation-wide effort to strengthen security measures and no irregularities were found.
