Poppy connection

Rail users are urged to stand shoulder to shoulder with the Armed Forces community and take part in this year’s Poppy Appeal.

First Capital Connect (FCC) is teaming up with the Royal British Legion and granting them access to their stations.

FCC managing director Neal Lawson said FCC’s railway stations are important locations for the appeal with the busiest able to raise up to £2,500 each.

Mr Lawson said: “Our Armed Forces make an enormous sacrifice for this country and to be able to play an important part in the vital fundraising campaign on their behalf is an honour.

“It’s a decision welcomed by all our staff, many of whom have said that, of all the charity collections that take place at our stations through the year, the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal is one of those they feel most passionate about.”

Commuters on the Great Northern and Thameslink routes will see local volunteers collecting at the stations until November 10.

The Royal British Legion’s Service of Remembrance will take place on Sunday, November 11 from 10.57am at the war memorial outside Luton Town Hall to honour people who have given their lives in past and present conflicts. A number of groups will parade from Park Street West to the war memorial where at 11am a two minutes silence will be observed, marked by the sounding of The Last Post and Reveille by Alan Norman from the Salvation Army.
