Post Office bosses promise to listen to customers
But closures could come as soon as next month
Public opposition to the proposed closure of post offices in the Luton and Dunstable area will be taken in consideration, bosses at the ailing organisation say.
The Post Office was responding to the hundreds of customers who put their names to our campaign to keep the branches open during a six-week public consultation, which ended last week.
Readers' responses to the campaign showed just how unpopular the company's proposals are, with many insisting their local post office was a lifeline for them.
The closure proposals have come about partly because of falling customer numbers and the fact that many once-unique services are now available elsewhere, bringing the business to what it calls "a crucial point".
The branches under threat are High Street South and Luton Road in Dunstable; Atherstone Road, Trinity Road, Biscot Road, Seymour Road and High Town Road in Luton; plus village branches in Eaton Bray, Chalton and Slip End.
In a letter to the News/Gazette last week, a spokesman said the feedback from the consultation would "inform and shape" the final decision on the proposals, which could see branches closing as early as October.
