Rail union says cuts aren't the ticket

Three stations listed for changes

Ticket office opening hours at three stations in the Luton area could be cut back under a review by train operator First Capital Connect.

Staff at Luton, Luton Airport Parkway and Harlington stations are currently being asked for their views on the proposed reductions in opening hours, but the company refused to give specific details of the cuts when contacted.

A spokesman would only say that the current ticket office closing time of midnight at Luton and Airport Parkway could be "moved to a bit earlier" and that the weekend opening hours at Harlington could be reduced.

He added: "Ticket offices will remain open during peak ticket-buying times."

The stations are among 28 in London and the south east earmarked for major changes, and the move has angered the Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT), which says 22 jobs are threatened by the proposals.

RMT general secretary Bob Crow said: "We know that passengers want to see more staff on stations, not fewer, and these cuts are the last thing that commuters, rail workers or the economy need."
