Remember war veterans at Sunday ceremony

Service to take place outside Luton Town Hall

Brave servicemen and women who have fought for their country will be remembered at ceremonies in Luton, Dunstable and Houghton Regis on Sunday.

Luton's Remembrance Sunday service, organised by the Royal British Legion, will take place at the war memorial outside the Town Hall on Sunday, starting at 10.57am.

The University of Bedfordshire's pipe band will lead a parade from Park Street West to the war memorial, and at 11am the two minutes' silence will be observed. The start and end of the silence will be marked by the firing of a gun accompanied by the sounding of the Last Post and Reveille, performed by a representative from the Salvation Army.

Prayers and the laying of wreaths will then take place, with a wreath of white poppies being laid by Luton peace campaigners.

Mayor of Luton, Councillor Mohammed Riaz, said: "Remembrance Sunday gives us an opportunity to reflect on the many men and women in the armed services who have sacrificed their lives for their country.

"We also must not forget the ongoing conflicts that exist today and the exceptional bravery of those who have been wounded and those who are continuing to fight in wars to protect and save the lives of many others."
