Row over jubilee bin build-up

Rubbish from the double bank holiday was not collected until this week

A LIB DEM councillor says food waste was allowed to build up after the Diamond Jubilee bank holiday because residents were confused about when it was due to be collected.

Some recycling bins were emptied by Luton Borough Council over the double bank holiday by staff who had volunteered to work, but black bins were not collected until this week, meaning some residents had two weeks’ worth of waste.

Deputy leader of the Luton Liberal Democrats, Bushmead and Barnfield councillor Martin Pantling, said a “failure to communicate” meant many rubbish bins were put out as normal, leading to uncollected rubbish piling up in the streets.

He said: “People are used to their bins being collected a day or two late after bank holidays. But to not bother collect them at all for the whole week is outrageous.

“With many families buying in extra food and drink over the Holiday, and most children off school, it’s obvious there will be more rubbish to collect than usual, not less.

“This just shows the low priority Labour give to street services compared to vanity projects like the misguided busway and their now desperately promoted pop concerts.”

Labour councillor Dave Taylor, responsible for environment, said residents had been informed of when collections would take place.

“There were no regular collections over the bank holiday and there were no catch up collections – as they would be over longer holiday periods like Christmas - because all collections returned to normal on Monday June 11,” he said. “All the backlog from the two day holiday has now been cleared.

“At a time when this Tory Lib Dem government is taking away 30 per cent of Luton council’s money, the council has to make tough choices and cuts that they don’t want to make.”
