Herald&Post reporter Steve Nolan joined a record 55,000 other running enthusiasts at this year’s Bupa Great North Run on Sunday.

Steve completed the 31.1 mile Newcastle to South Shields half marathon in one hour and 57 minutes.

He has so far raised around £300 for the Alzheimer’s Society with sponsor money still coming in.

He said: “It was such an amazing day despite the fact that it rained fairly heavily for the first five miles.

“There were literally thousands of people lining the route to cheer us runners on – the atmosphere was electric. I’m delighted to have raised money for such a worthwhile cause.”

> Also delighted to make it around the route was Luton lady Caron Hooper who succesfully completed the course in two hours and 29 minutes.

Caron raised funds for Starlight Children’s Foundation – a national charity that grants once-in-a-lifetime wishes for seriously and terminally ill children and provides entertainment in hospitals and hospices across the UK
