The brightest students at Barnfield College celebrated the college’s best ever results at a special event on Thursday.

The youngsters studied a range of subjects, from professional cookery to electrical installation and vehicle maintenance.

Some of them plan to study further, either at the college or university, while others already have jobs lined up thanks to their work experience and placements at college.

College chief Sir Pete Birkett, pictured with the students, said: “These results are amazing and they’re down to the hard work of the students and staff. We are really pleased.”

Bodrul Hussain, 22 from Dallow in Luton said: “What I like about Barnfield is the practical learning. Here they teach by showing you and by letting you do it yourself, then you learn the theory afterwards whichmakes studying really easy. This is the better way – do it first then learn.”

Bodrul and his friend Aamir Harron, 20, both studied Level 3 Extended diplomsa in IT and got distinctions. They both said their tutors are one of the best things about Barnfield.

Stephen Lara, 20, from Houghton Regis is studying electrical installation and is doing an apprentiship at the same time.

Stephen said: “I work four days a week then do one day at college. The teachers are really clued up. When I was at school I knew I wanted to do an apprenticeship because I am more hands-on than just sitting in a classroom. It’s great because you get paid to work as well.”

Lewis Hammond, 19 from Sundon Park and Robert Grace, 19 from Crawley Green Road area are both studying painting and decorating. They say Barnfield tutors treat students like adults and give them respect and responsibility.

Lewis said: “I tried sixth form but it didn’t work out. It was too much like school and they treat you like you’re back at nursery. No one likes being talked down to and here it’s a level playing field. It’s also nice to have a career path sorted, it takes a lot of the pressure off - things just seem to open up for you.”
